Terrariums

SUCCULENTS

Succulents are great survivors, some more than others...

Here is my list of the top succulents to use in terrariums.

TALL:
Donkey Ears
Kalanchoe

MEDIUM HEIGHT:
Hens and Chicks
Echeveria
Minature Aloe

LOW GROWING / TRAILING:
 Sedum Dasyphyllum
Burros Tail
String of Pearl
note:
I generally avoid the succulents with thorns... aka "cactus" just because I don't want to get pricked.  But if you are braver than I...go for it!
tips:
  • As well as survival you will want a variety of height... typically per terrarium I choose maybe one tall plant a few medium sized plants and then a few low growing plants.
  • Succulents are also very easy to propogate... So, when you are putting together your terrarium cut off a few pieces and plant them in a different pot for the future.
  • A commercial greenhouse will have a better selection, however if you buy your succulents at a Lowes or Home Depot you can save a bunch of money and sometimes you can buy a flat of your favorites!
  • Be sure to mix in some bright pops of color with the greenery.
  • Before you begin consider your theme
    • Succulents are great for desert themed terrariums.
